Q&A with Powerone, Bestselling Sizzler Editions Author of Bondage and Discipline

Powerone is one of the reigning masters of the novel of domination and submission. His books have consistently climbed to number one on erotica bestseller lists. Readers of all types are drawn to his sharply characterized novels of strong men and the women who love to submit to them. His newest novel, Wicked and Wild West, is an intense, and perhaps all-too accurate look at an aspect of the West, where ropes are used for more than cattle. It's the story of two doms caught in a struggle over one woman.

Sizzler Editions: Why do you write the type of book you are best known for?

Powerone: I started writing about 10 years ago, deciding that I would try writing a story after reading lots of what other people had written on various Internet reading sites for erotica. When you start out, you write what you know best. So I wrote bondage and S&M, some very extreme. It seemed that I had a knack for writing because I got lots of responses from readers and over the course of the next five years, I won numerous awards for some of my stories, usually in the non-consensual category.

In 2006, an editor for another publisher (which is also a writer for this publisher) suggested that I write a novel and see if I could make any money doing it. If you have read any of my short stories, many are far from being short stories. Some have up to 12 chapters to it and could become a book so it wasn’t much of a leap from short story to novel. I wrote it, they edited it and then they changed their mind about publishing erotica, compared to romance, which is what they were known for. So, they gave me back my contract and I came to Renaissance ebooks with it and it was published. That novel was “Teaching the Au Pair to Submit” and is still one of my best selling novels.

Since that time, I have always published novels that had bondage in them, some of them more extreme with S&M, all with reluctant woman that succumb to their dark desires. I tend to write from both aspects, the male and the female character. I enjoy getting into the minds of my characters and what they are thinking.

Sizzler Editions: Where do you get your ideas?

Powerone: I have a very vivid imagination. I can get the idea of a book from the simplest of things; just a few words can provoke images in my head. I don’t outline a book; it just seems to flow out of my head as I write. I have to be careful at times, finishing up one book before I will start another. It doesn’t work writing two books at one time.

I live at the beach in Southern California and doing the winter, I have the college students living down here and the summer we have the tourists. So, I have lots of girls in very skimpy bikini’s walking around year round. If they only knew what I was thinking, though I suspect their sex life is a lot duller then my female characters from my novels.

I also love the erotic novels of the 60, 70’s and 1980’s, though they are hard to find now. What used to sell for $1.95 is now $45.00 on websites, but luckily, I have a fine collection purchased over the years. They are quite different from my novels, but they often inspire me.

Sizzler Editions: How and when do you write?

Powerone: I work a “real job” three days a week, but that is finally diminishing, and I write the other four days. I work outside (weather is always nice and lots of girls to look at). I write best in the morning and afternoon, using the night for doing the “marketing” that is required for writers if they want to be successful.

For the last six years, I have written between 5-7 novels a year, having completed a total of 47 now. With writing, there is always up days and down days, enjoying best the days when the words come out of my head and go onto my laptop with such ease. Those are the days when you hate to stop writing and you can’t wait to get back to it.

Sizzler Editions: What do you like most about being an author?

Powerone: I love to see my name in “lights”, seeing a novel on Amazon, Barnes and Noble or one of the other sites and know that I wrote it and to see how it is doing, whether it’s on the top lists or reading the reviews. I often check the major sites daily to see how my novels are doing.

It always amazes me when I do the final read through of my latest novel, unable to believe that I had actually written it.

Sizzler Editions: What is your advice to beginning writers.

Powerone: Try your luck on the large selection of Internet sites that publish stories. Find sites that specialize in what you write, let the readers tell you how you are doing. But, always edit your stories. Don’t insult the readers by throwing out a story with lots of mistakes, misspellings and poor grammar. Many of the websites that publish the stories have lists of people that will proof your story. Don’t take every comment to heart, there is always some that will only try to complain or cut the writers ability down. Read it and go onto the next. If all of them are that way, maybe you need to do something different in your writing or maybe you should not be writing.

Read other successful authors in the genre that you want to write. Find out what makes their story so compelling for the readers to buy their books.

Sizzler Editions: Is there anything you would like to say to your fans?

Powerone: I want to thank all my fans for buying my books and inspiring me to write better each time. I love the emails I get from readers, their suggestions (just a simple suggestion from a reader has inspired a novel) and their criticism.

Sizzler Editions: What can your readers look forward to reading from you in the future.
Powerone: As I mentioned, I am hoping soon to have more time to write so you will soon more books from me. I am always looking for something new. I have a novel in my head that will be a male-male bondage novel. You might even see a romance come out of my head in the future.

My next novel will be “Wicked and Wild West.” You will love it, a look at the Wild West as it really was. It is almost ready to be published. I am working on “Suburban Wives Bondage Club” which should be out in October. The Stepford Wives have nothing on these ladies.

I've been extremely busy. "Kidnapped to be a Whore" has become a record breaking novel for me. In two weeks it sailed through 4 awards, they even had to name a new one to keep up with the record breaking sales. In less then two weeks, it is #2 for the year in sales and #15 for all time. The weather is back to being gorgeous. No more "marine layer" clouding the sun. College students are gone for the summer, the tourists are coming to town now.

Been feverishly working on Opposites. I had hoped to finish it this weekend, but was a little short, so it will be done next Friday. Should be available for sale the following Friday, June 19, 2009. I think this is novel #30.

Have to work on some short stories for my website. I have been so busy with the novel and having to rebuild the website that I am behind. I need to finish up War Victims-The Outake. The twins still have to be abused.

Just posted my newest story, The Cop and The Reluctant Teen. Its the short story that's been in my head for too long. I still haven't finished it yet, but you will enjoy. This is the one that Tulia did a sketch to inspire me to write it.

I am working on my newest novel, Opposites. It is going slow, the weather too nice, too many distractions. You will enjoy this one, nice twist in it.

I posted a new story, War Victims, the Lost Chapter. Its not finished, but had to put up what I had so far. I will finish it next weekend.

I also wrote part of a new story, The Cop and the Reluctant Teen. This is the story I had floating around in my head for a couple of weeks. Its about 3/4 of the way finished, but will post what I have written as soon as its back from the Editor.

I started my new novel, Opposites. I think you are really going to like this one. I have some real twists that you will never see coming. Scheduled for Mid May publication.

Weather has been unseasonal summer. Denver has three feet of snow, we have to suffer with temperatures in the 90's. I suffered all day on the patio.

Great weekend. Summer here (sorry if you live in Chicago and got snow the other day). I finished "War Victims" and sent it for final edit to Jan. I should have it back for my final edit and hopefully it will be out next weekend. Easter on Sunday, so might be a couple of days later.

The novel, "War Victims" is almost complete, probably by next weekend. I plan to do an outtake for a free story on my website to interest my readers in the novel. Tulia is working on a picture to go along with the story. Here it is, partly done. I think you'll like the story as well as the picture.

I also have two or three Editors that edit my novels. Jan is my main one. She's been doing it for a couple of years now for me. Than I have Alexis, which comes and goes like the tides, but also has been doing it for over a year. The newest one is Roxanne, starting a couple of months ago. They all do excellent jobs in catching my incorrect words, phrases and most important they tell me when I have characters doing unbelievable things.

Still waiting for Subjected Teacher to be on fictionwise.com. My publisher keeps telling me Monday, but there was a problem with the last file she uploaded (it rejected) so I am still looking at it next week.

"Rin Pays for Daddy's Mistake"

Now since I love the sun so much, it was disappointing that it rained on Sunday. But since we are having a drought out here, I can't complain much. Okay, I can complain, but it wouldn't do any good.

Doing well on "War Victims." Just finished up the second book in it and starting on the third. Not sure if it will have three or four stories, just depends on how carried away I get with this one. And I still have one more day of writing.

I also took an illustrated story I had done a long time ago, "Rin For Daddy's Mistake" added to it and I am going to post the first part on my website tomorrow. I will add to it every week or so. It has about 25 illustrations, so I think you will like it.

I am hoping that "Subjected Teacher" is released on Fictionwise.com tomorrow. It has been number 1 for two weeks at Renebooks.com, the publisher site. I have high expectations for it on fictionwise.com. Besides a great novel, it has an impressive cover by Tulia that will catch potential readers attention.

War Victims is doing well. About half way done and expect to get a lot done this weekend. Weather not exactly cooperating much. Overcast but it is 60 so I am not about to complain too much.

I'm on the second story of the novel, with one or two more to write. Plan to do an outake on this story (called Forced Pleasure Slaves) to publish for free on my website.

I couldn't find a war I liked so I made up my own

"The Second Civil War of 2010 was the West against the East, California taking the lead and attacking the heartland of the United States with ease. The United States government fell quickly, the military in the Western states aligning with the Western forces. By the summer of 2011, the lines had been drawn, Chicago west and south belonging to the Western United States, to the East still part of the Eastern United States, Mitt Romney now President. I think there is only two seasons, Spring and Summer and they correspond to the time changes. And thanks to the change of the dates a few years ago, Summer arrived this weekend. And I love it.

I love the longer day, don't care if its a bit darker in the morning. As long as I have a longer daylight.

I started the new novel, War Victims and got about 20% of it done. This will be one of my more extreme novels, so if that is what you like, I'm going to give it to you in this one. Nothing like a nice war to bring out the worst in men. And even though woman usually don't start wars (I'm not saying that aren't the cause of them) they are the ones that suffer the most.

Some men just enjoy the cruelty of the war a little too much and those are the types you will find in this novel. And some women just love the domination a little too much and you'll find them in this novel also.

If you feel that there is only a fine line between pleasure and pain, then this novel will be very pleasurable. For the men at least.

Sorry About the Snow Storm

Now I feel sorry if you live in the Southeast and the Northeast this week with your March Winter storm. But not too sorry. I lived too many years in New England and left there because of the winters.

My weather has been unseasonably hot, with record high temperatures. Been in the high 70's, low 80's. And it is what I consider the beginning of summer on Sunday, the time change. I hate when the time changes and its dark earlier, too depressing. Was so glad a couple of years ago when they shortened it. Should be like parts of Arizona. They never change.

Subjected Teacher will be published on Friday. Did a short story, an outtake of Subjected Teacher. Its out being edited, will be posted on Friday.

This weekend I get to begin writing "War Victims". I'm going to enjoy this one. Love the more extreme ones.

New Novel

Finished abusing all the lovely girls in Subjected Teacher so today I worked on updating website and ready to start next novel. Next novel is “War Victims”. I have been thinking about a number of different stories, though I never know until I actually start what it will be. Tulia has done an excellent cover for it. I have always been enthused over the adult comic book covers of the past and I gave some of them to Tulia and told her what I envisioned. As you can see, she excelled at the final cover.
